Crossley's growth is closely linked to the history of woven carpets in South Africa. Since 1947 we've operated out of Durban, the thriving port city in KwaZulu-Natal, a province of South Africa. Today Crossley is proud to be the largest woven carpet manufacturer in Africa and a leading supplier of custom woven products worldwide.

Here is a company that resonates with high energy - a young team with strong principles and the courage to realise its visions.

Crossley’s dual focus on innovation and discipline provides balance and helps us meet current and future needs in a dynamic market.

Crossley has pioneered many technological advances and introduced innovative skills to the weaving industry. Our history shows our commitment to productivity, safety and export achievements, and this is echoed in our continued growth and stability.

The company began at CMC South Africa in 1947 and the Crossley factory started operating in 1963. In the early 1970's the two factories merged and in 1975 it was purchased by the CG Smith Group - a major force in world sugar trading. Together with a number of textile companies held by the group it became known as the Romatex Group. In 1980 major interests in CG Smith were taken over by the industrial giant Barlow Rand and became listed in the textile and clothing sector of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. In 1992 Ulster Carpet Mills Holdings of Northern Ireland purchased the Crossley section of Romatex, making it the second largest Axminster manufacturer in the world. In 2004 the South African operation was bought out by management, resulting in the current company, Crossley Holdings (Pty) Ltd.
